Traktor Pro 2 may be a great bit of DJing software, with loads of flexibility and solid hardware, but even the hardest of hardcore fan would be fooling themselves if they said the built in controller manager wasn’t a right old mess. This is a sentiment that one enterprising coder echoes, and decided to do something about. Windows app cmdr is a from-the-ground-up rethink of Traktor TSI editing, aimed at making it easier to do.

The main new feature is the remix decks that will replace the sample decks that we are familiar with in the current version of Traktor Pro 2. All details about the new 2.5 version and about the new controller will be available as a free PDF update to all owners of a Traktor Bible, as soon as Traktor 2.5 and the Kontrol F1 controller are available. The Controller Manager is where you create, edit, load, import, and export controller mappings – it’s crucial to creating mappings, so let’s take a minute to understand it. At the top is the Device Setup area, where we manage all of our mappings, referred to in TRAKTOR as Devices. With Traktor 1.2 the architecture of the controller mappings has completely been reworked. This tutorial describes the new architecture, it explains the differences between a logical controller and a physical controller and it shows which device classes are available when you create a new logical controller.

Something, something, something, Traktor Pro 3.

To be honest, I’m surprised it’s taken this long for someone to build an app like this. I’m by no means a Traktor mapping expert, but even it get a little bit of sick in my mouth when I have to delve into my MIDI mappings. If this little bit of software makes it easier for people to tweak their controllers, then it’s all good. Perhaps Native Instruments should keep an eye on this project for some tips?

If you’re using a controller that isn’t “TRAKTOR ready', you can often find pre-configured MIDI mappings (.tsi files) on the manufacturer's website, or by searching the web. If not, you can create your own MIDI map for any controller by using the controller manager in TRAKTOR’s preferences via the MIDI learn mode. MIDI maps can be saved for future use.
